Office Pet Peeves How do you tell a coworker they smell bad
Office Pet Peeves How do you tell a coworker they smell badOffice Pet Peeves How do you tell a coworker they smell badIf you work in an open office space, collaborating with your colleagues is as easy as leaning over from your desk and talking to them. But working in close quartersalso means getting up close and personal with all of your colleaguesquirks - and their sounds and smells.Office pet peeves are born from this cramped petri dish of people working closely together well-meaning co-workers can turn into your frenemies who chomp food with their mouth open, talkloudly on phones, humalong to their music, wear pungent perfumes, carry the medieval body odor of someone whos never worn deodorant, and will never, ever change their behavior on their own.If its a temporary situation, the best thing to do is remove yourself, bodily, from exposure to the irritating behavior until its over. Buy headphones, move work stations, and suffer in silence until your trial is over. But if it keeps happening, you face a choice deal with the co-worker directly or get over it. Here are different work environment scenarios we can work through to see what you can do and what you can ask your offending colleague to do.1. Your co-worker is tooloudMany of us are sensitive to our surrounding noise levels. For some of us, its even a condition calledmisophonia where certain innocuous noises, like sniffing or eating a banana, can trigger a fight-or-flight response in our bodies that makes us see red and want to punch our colleagues. Before you confront your colleague for loudly eating a banana, however, think what you yourself can do. Can you move desks? Can you get a noise machine? Or noise-cancelling headphones? See if theres a way to establish quiet zones or a meeting where you can bring up noise etiquette to the entire office before you single anyone out.If your colleagues noisy behavior is particularly grating to your ears and is affecting your work, then we can go on to the next ste p of bringing it up with them.Be sensitive about how you do this. Asking your colleague to change their personal behavioris where it can get fraught. Recognize that however frustrating their behavior may be to you, the schwierigkeit is yours, not theirs. Trying to change someone elses behavior is a huge challenge for even experienced managers eventually we realize that we can only change our own. When you bring up your harte nuss, be sure to focus on that.Do the conversation in a neutral space away from prying ears. You can be frank if youre also polite, but offer to compromise if you have afternoon deadlines and need peace and quiet, mention that youre fine with whatever noise rituals they do in the morning.Lifehacker recommends easing the blow by mentioning thin walls and enclosed spaces. And after you do make your request, be polite by reciprocating and asking if theres any way you can make your colleagues working environment better. If your colleague is loud on all fronts- they s niff loudly, wear jangly jewelry, and keep shouting on phones- Fast Company recommends sticking to the one thing thats really bugging you so that the problemfeels fixable, instead of launching a rant about their entire body and personality - which will not go over well.2. Your co-worker smellsOkay, this ones trickier. If your co-worker is consistently smelly, no headphones will make that smell go away. After all your individual attempts to physically get away from your stinky colleague have failed, you can either learn to tune out the odor or go the much dicier route of asking your co-worker about their smell. The people I talked to who have experienced this firsthand chose to stay silent with their smell request. But there are brave people who have attempted to resolve this and have come out the other side in one piece. The goal, as with all of these requests about your own pet peeves, is to resolve the problem without burning bridges. It can be helpful to bring your concerns to a manager, whos better-trained in how to handle difficult conversations. (Though weve never met the manager who would relish this conversation either).Halley Bock, CEO of Fierce Inc., told Jezebel that the main thing when bringing up someones body odor is to beclear, concise, and compassionate. What does that mean? Dont be passive aggressive and leave hintsabout someones personal sauberkeit, and dont drag out the conversation when you have it in person. Also dont gossip about it even if you think youre being subtle, people can always tell when theyre being gossiped about.Bock suggested telling them,Im sure youre not aware of it but thought youd like to know that Im noticing an odd odor. Then, briefly state why this is important, why you want to resolve it and then give your smelly colleague a chance to respond.Granted, this is a highly risky gambit. Tone is key you dont want the person to feel like theyre on trial. If youre a manager and your direct reports smell is affecting your clien ts and work, youre going to need to have this difficult conversation, no matter how much you dont want to have it.Ask a Managers Alison Green recommends telling them theres a problem directlywith as much respect as possible. Its awkward, and I hope I dont offend you. Youve had a noticeable odor lately. It might be a need to wash clothes more frequently or shower more, or it could be a medical problem. This is the kind of thing that people often dont realize about themselves, so I wanted to bring it to your attention and ask you to see what you can do about it.This is all very direct, and its understandable if you dont want to say those words and keep the peace instead. That said, youre not a hall monitor for other peoples hygiene. No need to bring up the potential consequences if they dont follow through. It can be a mortifying conversation for all parties involved and for most employees, it will be a one-time one. If your first attempt doesnt work, there really is no option to try a gain. This conversation is not easy but if you do go to a manager, remember to make a business case. Their job is to make sure that direct reports best represent your company, including appropriate levels of personal hygiene.Oh, and if this could be you remember to give yourself a sniff before leaving the house, wear clean clothes to work, and keep a personal hygiene kit in your work bag, including deodorant and mouthwash or toothpaste and a toothbrush.

Johann Gutenberg and Invention of the Printing Press
Johann Gutenberg and Invention of the Printing PressJohann Gutenberg and Invention of the Printing PressJohann Gutenberg is nearly universally credited with being the inventor of the printing press, and the father of the modern printed book. Gutenberg welches an early communications catalyst who invention of the printed book opened up the world to the quick and efficient spread of knowledge and ideas. The Invention of the Book Despite Gutenbergs cultural status as the forebear of the modern book production process- Time magazine named him Person of the Millennium in 1999- relatively little is known about the details of his life. Gutenbergs Life Johann Gutenberg was born into an upper-class family of goldsmiths in Mainz, Germany around 1395. Much of what else we know about Gutenbergs life is through legal documents of his time. For example, he promised to marry someone but didnt, and she took him to court and he owed money from what seemed like a get-rich-quick scheme involvin g selling baubles to religious pilgrims.Tidbits of information from these and other legal documents and intense scholarly investigation suggest Gutenberg was a man passionately dedicated to the idea of the mass production of printed pages, an inventor who borrowed money in order to see his work through to completion- and one who was extremely secretive about his ideas while they were in development. One person who lent Gutenberg a substantial sum was Johann Fust. Fust eventually sued to get back his money and the accrued interest and seems to have taken over the original press, which had been put up as collateral. Gutenberg continued his printing careerand appears to have continued modifying printing methods to enable additional efficiencies. At the end of his life, he was granted an allowance from the archbishop of Mainz for food and clothing, suggesting he lived out his days in relative comfort. Gutenbergs Printing Methods Some conjecture that Gutenbergs exposure to metal cast ing methods in the family goldsmithing geschftlicher umgang gave him the skills necessary to create the individual, reusable letters cast in metal- the movable type- to set pages. While the Chinese invented a form of movable type about five hundred years earlier and continued to make improvements to their methods, restrictions of the language, religion, culture, and materials kept the technology from widespread use.Whatever inspired Gutenberg to his printing ideas, he needed to have worked extremely diligently in a variety of subject areas- what we know now as chemistry and mechanical engineering- to bring the printing press to practical application. His metal type necessitated his invention of new, oil-based inks that would stick to the type. It also necessitated the creation of a device that could transfer- press- the ink evenly onto the pages. Its assumed that Gutenberg used a screw press to print his books. Similar devices were at the time used to make paper and to press grapes for wine.Improvements in paper production brought costs down and made the paper a viable substance for books, more economical than vellum. Gutenbergs Bibles The Gutenberg Bibles, which dates from the 1450s, are considered to be the first books printed in the Western world and, although they dont bear the printers name anywhere in the volumes, are attributed to Gutenbergs first printing efforts. Several of these are in the possession of the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City and are frequently on display. Gutenbergs Legacy Prior to the invention of the printing press, books existed in codex form that is, books were hand-copied and a Bible would take around two years to produce. Most of the general public would have seen a book- that Bible- only in church, and all but the wealthy and learned would likely have to travel to get a look at one of the classic texts such as Homers Illiad. As book printing-publishing was established as a business, the first book trade fair was established in Frankfurt, Germany, not far from where Gutenberg printed his first Bible. The efficiencies of using movable type and a printing press to produce books quickly paved the way for the mass production of books and other reading material, including printed handbills advertising these early books- the first book marketingPrinted information caught on quickly as a method of communication. For the first time in history, ideas were literally put in the general publics hands in the form of the printed word, andbook publishing enabled knowledge, thoughts and culture to spread at a rate faster than ever before. Randstad US Workers#8217; Confidence Dropped During Government Shutdown
Randstad US Workers8217 Confidence Dropped During Government Shutdown New data shows that, in October 2013, U.S. employees reported lower levels of confidence when it came to the economy and job market, with the Randstad U.S. Employee Confidence datenbankindex dipping 4.2 points to 51.5. This data, collected from October 8-10, reflects the attitudes and perceptions of employees during the government shutdown. The Randstad Employment Tracker, conducted online by Harris Interactive, included 1,032 employed U.S. adults ages 18 and older. Given the government shutdown and the fight over the debt ceiling, it comes as no surprise that employee confidence is being affected, said Jim Link, Chief HR Officer, North America, at Randstad. However, what we did find interesting was the increase in personal confidence, specifically in workers outlook on the future of their employer and in their ability to find n ew jobs. This may be explained by the fact that, in spite of the furlough of 400,000 government employees, the vast majority of workers did not experience a direct impact from the shutdown. With the jobs report likely being distorted over the next few months, it may take some time to regain a sense of normalcy. Many economists have noted other indices such as confidence levels, retail hiring, data on the housing market and consumer spending, will likely carry even greater weight to gauge the full effect of recent governmental activity. As the second largest staffing and HR services firm in the world, Randstad has been tracking workforce trends and publishing the U.S. Employee Confidence Index since 2004.Employee Confidence IndexEmployeeMacroPersonalTransitionSecurity MONTHConfidenceConfidenceConfidenceIndexIndexOct-1351.534.868.33771Sep-1355.744.766.73676Aug-135847.368.73272Jul-1356.344.368.33672Jun-1356.846.567.13672May-1354.842.667.13769Apr-135746.867.23569Mar-1353.940.167.83373Feb -1353.542.964.13772Jan-1352.138.365.83372
